By the time Caravan were ready to start recording their third album, they understood the important role of a producer and asked Hitchcock to fill that gap. He was quite a hard taskmaster, which was what LP needed. Stop doing that. Do this, that next thing.
We learned a very important lesson that day. The LP of three songs written by bass player and singer Richard Sinclair, it was the B-side on a single the band released from the album, with Love to Love You as the leading track. Golf Girl, originally titled Group Girl, is indeed inspired by a scene on a golf course.
That was the first song I wrote. Here is a performance of this whimsical song, performed in for the Beat Club program on German TV:. Another Richard Sinclair composition on the album is the title track In the Land of Grey and Pink, which gave the inspiration to the magnificent drawing on the album cover.
The artist of that cover, Anne Marie Anderson, worked for the art department at Decca and unfortunately created very few album covers, one of them for Fuchsia in I was a Boy Scout, bob-a-job. You do it to yourself really, just make them into little men who climb about. The third and final composition by Richard Sinclair is also his finest on this album. The interesting melody fits perfectly the fairy tale lyrics:. Caravan was a great band to watch playing LP, as can be seen in another clip from the same Beat Club program.
This is a live performance of the song:. There is no shortage of epic titles created by progressive music bands in the early s, those complex compositions made of smaller sections linked together artfully to form a cohesive long piece of music. Nine Feet Underground, taking the whole of side two on the LP, must rate with the best of them. With Richard Sinclair writing most of the tunes on side one, his cousin Dave Sinclair saved the best for last and wrote a suite featuring eight sections that move beautifully from one to the next.

The band look back favourably on the album and several of its tracks have remained fixtures in Caravan's live repertoire.
It has been reissued several times, including a comprehensive 40th anniversary remix package by British musician and producer Steven Wilson in Though Caravan had yet to achieve strong commercial success inthey had started to build a live following, including an appearance at the Kralingen Pop Festival in the Netherlands to an audience ofand the 10th Plumpton Festival.
In between touring, the group had written several new pieces that they wanted to record. Guitarist Pye Hastings had written the bulk of material for earlier albums, which led to Honest I Did! - Caravan - In The Land Of Grey And Pink (Vinyl backlog of songs composed by the rest of the group; consequently he only offered a single song, "Love to Love You And Pigs Might Fly ". Bassist Richard Sinclair had written "Golf Girl", a song about his girlfriend and future wife. The group helped with the arranging and joining of sections, resulting in a minute piece, "Nine Feet Underground".
The song was recorded in five separate sections and edited together by Hitchcock and engineer Dave Grinsted. The final version features a folk influenced acoustic guitar introduction and included an improvised organ section in the middle.
The album was mixed at Decca in January During the sessions at Air Studios, the band recorded a rough version of "Aristocracy", but it was shelved and re-recorded the following year for the next album, Waterloo Lily.
He came up with the phrase after looking at the sky at sunset during rehearsals at Graveney early in the band's career. The album was released on 8 April and featured a Tolkien influenced cover, drawn by Anne Marie Anderson.
