This is a special rock Raise Em Up Together - Tony Furtado - Deep Water (CD once belonged to my Grandmother. She lived most of her adult life in Oregon and northern California but was born in Nebraska.

She did do some traveling in the west and out east, so maybe got it from her travels. Somebody could have given her the rock. Nobody knows where it came from nor what the rock is actually called. Both the lighter "matrix" color has the same size grains as the dark. Is it volcanicperhaps a rhyolite or a welded tuff? Is it sedimentary--maybe a red sandstone or siltstone? I've had some great discussions going on at a couple of geology blogs and will update when I think I've solved the mystery!

Furtado has a knack for combining rootsy blues riffs with catchy melodic lines. The results are both aurally arresting and emotionally involving. On the opening selection, "The Bawds OfZuphony," Furtado weaves the lead lines from his banjo with his slide guitar, electric guitar, and dobro-banjo to create a virtual wall of densely packed musical textures.

Deep Water is another predominantly low-key yet never easygoing set of ballads and midtempo folk-rockers, with an emphasis on folk. The tracks are a little shorter and tighter this time, yet nonetheless sizzle like a dry fuse threatening to detonate its bomb. Most never do -- however, the anticipation creates tension that fuels this darkly tuneful music.

Vocals aren't Furtado's strong suit, yet he Album) loose and comfortable, applying his dusky, five-o'clock-shadow voice to songs that make the most of his less-is-more singing and deceptively intricate guitar and banjo work. He has gradually shifted away from the obvious Ry Cooder-isms that informed previous sets. Furtado continues to use his slide as coloring on the lovely "Every Raise Em Up Together - Tony Furtado - Deep Water (CD Crack" and the easy picking of "Tongue Tied," sounding somewhat like David Lindley on early Jackson Browne releases.
